How to Share a Screenshot on WhatsApp, Telegram, X, LinkedIn and Reddit Without Losing Quality
Updated November 5, 2026 · 9 min read
Social and messaging apps are built for photos, not screenshots. They compress images to save data, which is fine for a holiday picture but turns small text into a blur. Feeds also crop tall images. This guide covers each major app: how to post a screenshot natively, how to keep it sharp, and when sharing a link to the full image is the better choice.
The universal fix: share a link
Before going app by app, here's the method that works everywhere and never loses quality:
- Copy or save your screenshot.
- Paste or upload it on sshot.online.
- Paste the share link into your message or post.
Most apps show a preview of the image, and tapping it opens the original at full resolution. It's ideal for long screenshots, screenshots with small text, and sending the same image to several apps.
- Native: tap the + (iPhone) or paperclip (Android) icon, choose Photos or Gallery, and pick the screenshot.
- Keep it sharp: before sending, tap the HD button at the top of the preview where available. For full original quality, choose Document instead of Photos. The recipient gets the untouched file, though it won't show as a preview in the chat.
- WhatsApp Desktop and Web: paste with Ctrl + V right into the chat.
- Tip: long scrolling screenshots are hit hardest by compression. Send them as a link or a document.
Telegram
- As a photo: fast and shows inline, but compressed.
- As a file (full quality): on desktop, untick Compress the image in the send dialog; on mobile, use the File option in the attachment menu.
- Paste: Telegram Desktop accepts pasted screenshots directly.
X (Twitter)
- Native: click the image icon in the composer; you can add up to four images per post. Add a description (alt text) so people using screen readers know what it shows.
- Watch the crop: very tall or very wide screenshots are cropped in the timeline preview. Crop the screenshot so the important part is in the middle.
- As a link: paste the share link in a post, a reply or a DM; X shows a preview card for links that have preview images.
- In a post: click Start a post, then the media (photo) icon, and upload the screenshot. Add alt text from the image settings.
- In a message: use the image icon in the message box, or paste a share link if you want the recipient to see the original size.
- Professional tip: for product updates, a cropped screenshot with one highlighted element performs much better than a full-screen capture. See how to annotate a screenshot.
- Image post: choose Images & Video when creating a post and upload the screenshot. Not every community allows image posts, so check the rules in the sidebar.
- In a comment: some communities allow images in comments; elsewhere, paste a link to the image instead.
- Link post: choose Link and paste the share link.
- Privacy: Reddit is public. Remove usernames, emails and anything identifying before posting.
Instagram and Facebook
Both accept screenshots as normal images. Instagram crops to square, portrait (4:5) or landscape, so a tall phone screenshot will be cropped in the feed; Stories fit tall screenshots better. Facebook handles screenshots in posts, comments and Messenger. For links in an Instagram bio, see how to shorten a link for your Instagram bio.

Before you post: a privacy check
Screenshots of chats, emails and dashboards often show other people's names, profile photos, phone numbers and messages. Cover them with a solid box, not a highlighter. The full checklist is in how to blur sensitive info in a screenshot.
Work chats
Sharing in Slack, Discord or Microsoft Teams instead? Those have their own tricks, covered in sharing screenshots in Slack, Discord and Teams.
Upload once, then paste the link into WhatsApp, Telegram, X, LinkedIn or Reddit. No compression, no account.
Frequently asked questions
Why do screenshots look blurry on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp compresses photos to save data, which softens small text. Use the HD option when sending, send the screenshot as a document, or share a link to the full-quality image.
How do I send a screenshot on Telegram without compression?
Attach it as a file instead of a photo. On a computer, untick "Compress the image" when sending; on a phone, use the File option in the attachment menu.
Can I post a screenshot link instead of the image on X or LinkedIn?
Yes. Paste the share link in your post or message. Both platforms usually show a preview, and readers can open the full-size image.
What is the best size for screenshots on social media?
Crop to the important part and keep text large. A screenshot that is readable on a phone screen without zooming works best; very wide or very tall images get cropped in feeds.
Is it okay to share screenshots of other people's messages?
Be careful. Hide names, photos and numbers of people who did not agree to be shared, and check the platform's rules and local privacy laws.
